Making snowshoes

Hans Løvmo makes traditional snow shoes from spruce and birch twigs. His grandfather made a living in part from making and selling snowshoes and brooms. Hans is dedicated to passing on the family knowledge, making snow shoes and brooms as a hobby to this day.

The video is part of a documentation project by the Norwegian Crafts Institute, in collaboration with Norsk Skogfinsk Museum, and The Norwegian Forest Museum.

Basketmaker Yuri Khodij

A piece of Arkhangelsk in Spildra

Artist and craftsman Yuri Khodij (Ходий Юрий) from Arkhangelsk makes a traditional wood chip basket. Over the course of a summer, Yuri and a few other craftsmen built a traditional Sami boat house on the island of Spildra in Kvænangen. The island has a population of 26, and is an ancient place of settlement, with many cultural heritage sites. In the evenings, or when the weather didn’t encourage outdoor working, Yuri prepared material and made traditional wood chip baskets from left over material and drift wood.

Kvit Ole & Olebrim

Making cheese at the summer farm.

Thomas and Kathrin have a mini-cheesery set up at their summer farm in Valdres, Norway. "Kvit Ole" is a semi-hard cheese made from raw, organic goat milk.

The left over whey is normally given as feed to their three happy pigs. But once a week, they light up the wood burning stove, and make their version of the traditional Norwegian brown whey cheese. "Olebrim" is caramelised whey, with a bit of goat milk and goat cream mixed in.
